As spring arrives and the seasons change, it is always a dangerous time for picking up sore throats, colds and flus. Most sore throats are caused by a viral infection such as the cold or flu. If your sore throat is linked to one of these causes, you will likely experience a runny or stuffy nose, cough, fever, and fatigue as well.
There are countless sore throat remedies, many of which involve a combination of painkillers and anti-inflammatories. If you are like us and want to avoid pharmaceutical products and medicines, how can a sore throat be treated at home? How can you treat a sore throat naturally? The good news is that there are many natural remedies available for sore throat. The following are just 5!
Honey tops the list and is the most common natural treatment for a sore throat. There are many different types of honey, organic and “Manuka” honey which has medicinal properties.
How do you take honey for a sore throat? There are many different ways! Honey can be mixed in tea or taken on its own.
We usually try to combine honey with another of the remedies outlined in this blog. Another idea is turmeric! The medicinal benefits of turmeric are becoming very well-known and it has the natural antiseptic properties which helps to reduce the inflammation internally. For a sore throat, the combination of honey and turmeric is very effective.
You need one tablespoon of turmeric to 3-4 cups of water. Place this mixture on low flame. Add a lemon juice and honey, as per your taste in it. It will kill the bacteria and make you feel better during a sore throat attack. Perhaps not the most pleasant but it is clean, healthy and natural and works very well!
2 Chamomille Tea
Hot fluids are very good for alleviating a sore throat. Doctors will typically recommend the regular intake of hot fluids, which eases the pain and gradually helps cure the sore throat. That is why lemsip products are so popular – because they combine medicine with hot fluid. But unfortunately lemsip is just painkiller and other chemicals, and is not a natural remedy.
Different types of tea can help sooth sore throats. Our favourite healthy tea is chamomile tea, which is naturally soothing. It has long been used for medicinal purposes, like soothing a sore throat. Chamomile tea is often used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and astringent properties. Studies have shown that inhaling chamomile steam can help relieve symptoms of a cold, including a sore throat. Drinking chamomile tea can offer the same benefit. It can also stimulate the immune system to help your body fight off the infection that caused your sore throat in the first place.
You can try pouring yourself a hot cup of chamomile tea and inhaling the steam while the tea is cooling, and then when it is cooled a bit, you can drink it. This can also be combined with honey for a double benefit!
Peppermint is known for its ability to freshen breath, but it also has many other health benefits. One such benefit is the healing of sore throats.
Peppermint essential oil sprays relieve sore throats. It contains menthol, which helps thin mucus and calm sore throats and coughs. Peppermint also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, which may encourage healing.
For peppermint oil, you could mix 3-5 drops of the essential oil with a carrier oil of your choice and then rub it on the outside of your throat. Another way is to add a few drops of peppermint oil to warn fluid, such as a tea.
4 Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has been used in cooking for decades, for example in salads, dressings, or even baking. It adds a powerful and distinct flavour to food. It is healthy and its main component is Acetic acid, which can reduce blood pressure levels and help improve heart health. It is also used as a home remedy to treat various infections, including sore throat and cold.
The acidic nature inhibits the growth and spread of bacteria in your throat. It has antibacterial properties that are quite effective in fighting against infectious germs and bacteria.
ACV has many natural antibacterial uses and its antimicrobial effects help in fighting infections. Because of its acidic nature, it can be used to help break down mucus in the throat and stop bacteria from spreading.
If you sense a sore throat coming on, try diluting 1 to 2 tablespoons of ACV in one cup of water, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice of lemon essential oil and gargle with it. Then take a small sip of the mixture, and repeat the whole process every 2 hours. Make sure to drink lots of water in between the gargling sessions.
We recommend Bunalun which is a fantastic organic food label!
5 Cayenne pepper
Often used as a pain reliever, cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, a natural compound known for blocking pain receptors.
Ingesting cayenne mixed with warm water and honey can help with pain relief for sore throats. Remember that an initial burning sensation is common. Cayenne should not be taken if you have open sores in your mouth. Start with just a few drops of hot sauce or a light sprinkle of cayenne, as both can be very hot.
While a decongestant does relieve inflammation and mucus production in the nasal passages, a decongestant only cures a sore throat that is caused by a runny nose or postnasal drip.
Likewise, these medications may cause a variety of adverse side effects. Cayenne, on the other hand, treats a variety of causes of sore throat and has very limited side effects. Cayenne is a spice that relieves a sore throat naturally and effectively.
Cayenne contains a powerful ingredient called capsaicin. This compound is an effective anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent. When you take cayenne to treat your sore throat, you'll experience relief as far as reduced swelling but also healing as it eliminates infection. You can make “cayenne tea” by mixing 1/4 tsp. of cayenne powder into 1 cup of warm water. Add 2 tsp. honey to sweeten the tea. You should gargle this before swallowing. Alternately, thoroughly mix one drop of cayenne oil into 1 tsp. of honey and swallow but that is not as easy to take!
