6 Ways to Keep Your Skin Healthy

Your skin plays a vital role in protecting your body. It is so important to take steps to keep your skin healthier and to promote a healthier skin. You can keep your skin looking and feeling great by guarding against ailments like chapped skin to premature aging.

At Purity of Earth, we believe in incremental progress towards a healthier life. Try some of the following 6 steps to develop healthy skincare habits. These can be incorporated into your daily routine right away!

1          Stay Hydrated

And here we are again. In every “5 Ways To …” blog, drinking water and remaining hydrated appears. Skin that is properly hydrated retains pliability and is less likely to become chapped, scaly, or flaky.

Dry skin can have small gaps in the skin barrier that allow entry of bacteria and fungus. Remaining hydrated helps prevent that.

In addition to drinking enough fluids, keeping your skin moist is essential to skin protection.

Aside from your intake of water, try these tips to keep your skin hydrated:

  • Use the right moisturising cream or lotion for your skin. Such as moisturisers with ceramides, or coconut oil.
  • Always apply your moisturiser on damp skin. This keeps the moisture in the skin.
  • Take warm (not hot) showers or baths and try to keep them under 5 minutes. Over exposure to water actually dries out your skin.

2          Take Health Precautions

Cold sores are caused by a viral infection of the skin bordering the lips, while bacteria can contribute to acne and other skin conditions. Paying close attention to what touches your skin can help lower your chances of exposure to germs.

Some things to avoid:

  • Don't share any personal items, such as lip balms or toothbrushes, with others.
  • Don't share drinks with other people.
  • Avoid touching your face with your fingers, and avoid facial contact with objects that have been used by other people, such as phones.

Needless to say, tempting and all as it is, don’t pick at cysts or splinters. Instead, ask your doctor to help you with these skin conditions.

3          Limit Sun Exposure

Ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun cause many types of skin damage, including wrinkles, freckles, age spots, discoloration and also skin cancer.

Using skin care products that offer ultraviolet protection is one of the best ways to help keep your skin looking fresh and youthful. Strange and all as it sounds, even in a climate like Ireland and the UK, it is recommended that you use sunscreen every day and reapply regularly whenever you're outdoors for extended periods. If you are exposed to direct sun, then cover up by wearing hats and protective sun clothing.

And avoid, avoid, and avoid tanning beds.  They are even more harmful than direct sunlight.

4          Monitor Your Dairy Intake

This is for teenagers who may suffer from acne. Research shows that teenage girls who consume a lot of milk are more likely to have acne than those who drink less, and this may also be true for adult women who may be prone to serious breakouts. Cottage cheese, instant breakfast drinks, and sherbet are also linked to acne.

While there is not any proven reason as to exactly why milk products can lead to acne, the natural hormones present in dairy may be to blame.

While cutting back on dairy won’t solve a pimple problem single-handedly, it may make a difference for those who suffer severe breakouts. To avoid any negative consequences of this reduction in your diary intake, try to make sure that you’re getting enough calcium from other food sources, such as leafy greens, or consider taking a supplement.

5          Exfoliate Often

One of the main keys to healthy skin is exfoliating.

Exfoliating regularly sloughs away dead skin cells to reveal new, soft, smooth skin. It can also help increase circulation and improve the appearance of your skin.

Use gentle scrubs to exfoliate the skin on your face and other sensitive areas, and a coarser scrub on parts like elbows and knees. Exfoliating twice a week as part of a good home care regime – both the face and body. Because you are increasing blood circulation, breaking down toxins and encouraging new skin cells to come through, you should try and drink lots of water and thereby drain toxins and helps give those new skin cells a chance to flourish.

6          Use Gentle Skin Care Products

Too many people turn to mass produced skincare products containing chemicals and toxins in the hope of giving them a quick fix solution to skincare, and to keep their skin youthful.

Instead of mass produced products, use products that contain natural and pure ingredients and naturally occurring vitamins.

Shaving is a traumatic experience for your skin. It can often leave behind irritated skin, razor bumps, and a great deal of discomfort. Some essential oils hold significant soothing and calming properties for the skin, and can easily be used to avoid discomfort after shaving.

And what about removing your makeup? Store-bought removal products often contain harsh chemicals that can dry out the skin and leave it feeling unhealthy. You can make do-it-yourself remover wipes that moisturise the skin while providing gentle cleansing and will leave you with healthy, smooth, and radiant-looking skin. These involve Melaleuca, or Tea Tree, essential oil, fractioned coconut oil and cotton wool/ wipes.

With a few of these tips integrated into your daily routine, your skin will be naturally envigorated and should leave you looking and feeling younger, healthier, and more glowing and radiant then ever before!
